Imaging Tour 2010
East Coast Imaging Workshops
SilverBiology will be performing full day imaging and demonstrations of our software. We will be leaving from our office in Baton Rouge on July 18th and driving to Botany 2010 (BSA Conference in Providence, Rhode Island). We will be passing through the east coast until August 15th. During this time we would like to stop and provide a one day workshop on imaging, processing, and interacting with herbarium specimen sheets. Our goal during this tour is to image and process over 5,000 specimen sheets. We are asking for interested herbaria to request that we stop and visit by sending us an email at contact@silverbiology.com.

Workshop Overview
Morning Agenda:
- Introduction to SilverBiology, the software we produce, and services we offer.
- We will provide three hours of complementary imaging for specimen sheets within the collection. During this time we will demonstrate how SilverImage works, how this process fits into the larger scope of our services and biodiversity informatics, and what is done with the images after they are captured. We expect to capture 300-400 images during this time and these images will be the property of the collections to keep.
Afternoon Agenda:
- Introduction to HelpingScience.org and how SilverBiology helps to process the digital images collected. During the morning session we will be uploaded the new jpegs to out HelpingScience images server so that these images will be ready for processing directly after imaging and batching these images.
- We will demonstrate the Client Center which lets collection managers supervise the digitization of labels. We will show the images we have photographed during the morning and explain how optical character recognition is used in predicting label information.
- A demonstration of all three stages of the processing and how it works behind the scenes. Additional explanations will be provided on how volunteer accounts are created and how permission controls are setup for processing.
- Demonstration of interfaces for citizen scientists on the iPhone, iPad, Facebook, and custom interfaces that can be specifically designed for specific volunteer groups.
